Mac Office 2008

Not sure if anyone has been following Mac Mojo, but at least the MacBU has been opening up about their work on Mac Office 2007.

Any thoughts?

I know nothing about the Mac Rich, but thanks for the link anyway. I found it a well-written blog, and there was enough not Mac-specific stuff to keep me interested.

Just a note. This last week MS announced that the official designation of Office for Mac will be Office 2008. It is scheduled to ship in the 2nd half of 2007.

That follows the pattern of keeping Windows and Mac versions
on alternate years (since 2000). that also makes it much easier to distinguish when wanting help.

That's a good thing. Finding out the user uses a Mac version has saved me some pain when trying to help. (And usually meant a PM to Rich or BlueCactus)

I'm afraid the upgrade cycle is over for me. With no VBA, Mac Office 2008 serves no purpose. I saw no compelling reason to upgrade to Mac Office 2004, and there is even less for 2008. Sick to death of 'user interface enhancements' when you still have to pull out teeth to do something as simple as put superscripts in chart labels.

For now I continue with Mac Office X - runs faster under Rosetta on my new Mac Book Pro 2.33 GHz than it ever did natively on my PowerBook G4 1.5 GHz.

I keep half an eye out on this promise - it's a huge promise to keep though...

I also have NeoOffice on my Mac. The only problem with NeoOffice/OpenOffice incorporating VBA, is that even the Windows side is moving from VBA to VB.net. I have no idea how hard that will be for them to update/adjust. But certainly worth following.

Actually, I'm kidding. I do generally follow the thread, but mostly out of curiosity. I don't necessarily figure that I'll ever be able to solve a Mac issue, but then I never figured that I'd solve anyone's VBA question once either.

Not long ago I read an article in which Schwieb (on MacBU) indicated that there will be some kind of cross-platform programming, but not for 2008 - it will be the follow-on edition. That's at least refreshing... given the demise of any kind of programming support (aside from AppleScript) on the Mac side. Don't get me wrong, AppleScript can be useful. But it does nothing for cross-platform use.

Update on MacMojo MacTech magazine (April 2007) will be a "massive 150 page blockbuster entitled Moving from Microsoft Office VBA to AppleScript: MacTech's Guide to Making the Transition and is authored by none other than Mac Office MVP, Paul Berkowitz."

There is a new director (Craig) for the MacBU at MS. Probably won't make a big difference for Office 2008. But at least he has generated interest at Mac Mojo Blog.

Latest word from MacBU is that Office 2008 will be delayed until January 2008.
